What would Meduza look like under Kremlin censorship? See for yourself.
For nearly 11 years, Meduza has served readers in Russia while working from abroad — a deliberate choice to stay beyond the reach of the Kremlin’s repressive laws and censorship.
When Russia unleashed its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Kremlin cracked down on Meduza as never before. We were forced to evacuate staff still inside the country, learn to operate as a banned organization with criminal charges looming over our journalists, and find new ways to fund our work.
But one thing hasn’t changed: we continue to report the truth, in defiance of the Kremlin’s absurd restrictions. And we’ve never put our journalism behind a paywall.
This September, we launched a new crowdfunding campaign. As part of it, we’re showing readers what Meduza would look like under Kremlin censorship. Stories that couldn’t be published inside Russia are hidden behind black bars — a reminder, especially for those outside the country who can safely support us, that free speech is never guaranteed. It has to be defended every single day.
Censorship is dangerous, and it can reach anyone. From September 8–11, visit Meduza’s Russian-language homepage to see how deeply it distorts reality.
And please, support Meduza. Right now, we need you more than ever.
